What is in the new vue CAD app release?

In version 4.0, please look for:

  • Explode  — use 3 fingers in the graphics (pinch in/move out) to visually separate parts and subassemblies.
  • Measure — in the menu select the “Measure” icon in the menu. Tap on the two objects in the graphic to measure the distance between them.
  • Tree View — the “i” info button (the top left of screen) has now changed to Tree View-listing the current model statistics.
    Statistics include: Total model points displayed (drawing), Total faces displayed (drawing), size of the model (Bounding box), list of parts and components. To change a components visability tap each parts green check to display/not display.
  • SolidWorks importer now available as an in-App purchase.
Which file format / importers are supported?

FREE mesh formats are included:

  • Blender, Collada
  • Autodesk 3DS MAX, ASE & DXF

Neutral CAD formats are lower-priced in-App upgrades:

  • ACIS and Parasolid

OEM CAD formats are in-App upgrades:

  • SolidWorks
  • Catia V5, V4 & CGR
  • Unigraphics
  • Pro/Engineer
  • SolidEdge
  • Autodesk Inventor
What geometries are supported?

In version 4.0, solids, surfaces, some curves (lines and polylines) and points are supported.
Is color supported?

Color is supported for all models and file types that contain color.
Are textures supported?

Texture is supported for all models and file types that contain color.
Can we tryout the software? / Can we have a trial version?

vueCAD® (mobile cad app) is available for free. We do not have trial versions. Within vueCAD®, you may choose to purchase an in-App importer. The neutral CAD formats such as IGES, STEP, JT, VDA, ACIS, and Parasollid are low-priced upgrades. OEM CAD formats are higher-priced upgrades including SolidWorks, Catia V5 & V4 & CGR, Unigraphics, Pro/Engineer, SolidEdge, and Autodesk Inventor.
What if my file doesn’t load at all? (The screen is blank.)
What if my file loads incorrectly? (There is missing or extra geometry.)

There are several potential reasons this may occur — possibly the file was saved incorrectly, or the geometries are unsupported, or for other reasons. For example, in the DXF world, non-standard ACAD “data block” objects are occasionally outputted by 3rd party systems. For a free analysis of your problem, please email your file to
What if vueCAD doesn’t start? (I select the icon on my iPad, but nothing happens.)

With such a large iPad/iPhone application, any interruption in the download can cause problems. In this rare occurrence, please try deleting the application completely and then reloading it from scratch.

  1. On your iPad, hold your finger on the vueCAD icon until it shakes and the little “x” appears in the top right.
  2. Push the “x” to delete the vueCAD app.
  3. Either on your iPad, or on your computer:
    1. On your iPad, repurchase vueCAD.  You will not be charged — it will say you’ve already purchased.
    2. Or, on your computer, re-sync your iPad with the new vueCAD.
Is there a file size limitation on vueCAD?

There is no hard limitation on file size for vueCAD. There are however, constraints of the hardware (iPad/iPhone) and the iOS operating system. . For a free analysis of your problem, please email your file to
How can I transfer files to my iPad or iPhone?

There are several methods to move files to an iPad/iPhone.

  • Email
  • Drag and drop files into iTunes.
  • Use a 3rd party application like DropBox (see

How do I open files using Email?

In your email on your iPad/iPhone:
Tap / select the file. If the file extension is one of the standard, accepted formats, then it will open in vueCAD automatically.
How do I open files using DropBox?

In DropBox:

  1. Open/Start the DropBox application.
  2. Go through your directories until you find the file you want to open.
  3. Select the file.
  4. DropBox will respond “Unable to View the File” — this may take a minute.
  5. In the upper-right, select the icon “Open In” (rectangle with an arrow going out to the right).
  6. The dialog “Open In…” will appear with “vueCAD” visible.
  7. Select “vueCAD”.
How do I transfer files using iTunes?

In iTunes:

  1. Connect your iPad to your computer.
  2. Start iTunes.  It will probably start in the iTunes store.
  3. Under “Devices” on the left column, select your iPad.  Once selected, you should see the Summary page — an image of an iPad, its name, capacity, etc.  Also, you should see the tabs across the top “Summary — Info — Apps — Music — Movies — etc.”
  4. Select the “Apps” tab from the top list.
  5. Scroll down to the bottom of the Apps page, and find “File Sharing” with this description “The applications listed below can transfer documents between your iPad and this computer.”
  6. Under “File Sharing”, in the left column, you should see the app “vueCAD”  Click on “vueCAD”.
  7. The title of the right column should change to “vueCAD Documents”
  8. Drag-and-drop your files from your computer into the list “vueCAD Documents”
  9. The files will be copied over and added to the BOTTOM of the list in vueCAD.  When you go to open the file in vueCAD, please make sure to scroll to the bottom of the list.

Why is my SolidWorks assembly file not displaying correctly?

vueCAD supports both .sldprt and .sldasm files once you have purchase the in-app upgrade for the SolidWorks module. If you already made the purchase and your assembly file is not displaying correctly, please take the following steps:

  1. Make sure that all of the individual component files referenced by your assembly file are also present in the vueCAD folder (if they are not, please reference the previous FAQ for assistance in doing so).
  2. Once all of the files are present in vueCAD, you must “Import” your assembly file again from the “Import” list. The assembly file will now be displayed correctly.

**Note: It is not necessary to “Import” each of the part files into vueCAD before opening up the assembly file; they simply have to be present in the vueCAD folder.

I recently purchased a new Apple device and reinstalled vueCAD but my previous in-app purchases did not transfer over.

When you install vueCAD on a new device, the in-app upgrades are not installed automatically. You must click “Buy” for those modules on your new device. You WILL NOT be charged again if you have already made this purchase on another device. Please make sure you are using the same Apple ID as when you first purchased the module.
